RDAU talks to Hit and Miss Magazine’s Minnie Screwdriver & PT Bruza!

How did you both get involved in roller derby ?

Minnie: Aside from a few general skating sessions growing up and a fractured wrist in my tweens, I was a skating newbie. I’d played plenty of team sports but nothing full contact. I saw a screening of ‘Hell on Wheels’ and decided to get involved in helping to start Perth Roller Derby, the first roller derby league in Western Australia.

PT: I used to organise games of ‘roller ball’ in the car park near my house. It was a game I made up where you roll around on roller skates, blades, skate board or bike. It’s a bit complicated but involved a ball and skating through some goals. Someone told me that roller derby was starting in Perth so I went to see what it was all about. I’d done plenty of street skating and played in heaps of team sports, I’m also a PE teacher.

Tell us about the history of Hit and Miss Magazine (HAM).

Minnie: The idea of an Australian roller derby magazine was born on an outdoor skate along the coast of Trigg Beach, WA in early 2010. I’m always coming up with hare-brained schemes and inventions and saying stuff like, “wouldn’t it be great if…” Little did I know that PT is the kind of girl to take that moment of idle daydreaming and make you turn it into reality. By the next day she had designed a logo and scheduled our first meeting! Neither of us had any experience running a magazine but I’m a writer/journalist so I had a fairly good grasp of that side of things.

PT: I’ve designed posters and CD artwork for bands I’ve been in over the past 10 years. I’ve had to learn a lot, I’m still learning. It’s a lot of work and we don’t get much sleep because when our day jobs finish our night jobs begin. I move text boxes in my sleep!

What magazines do you both read?

Minnie: Anything I can find really, from roller derby magazines to mags like Frankie and whatever else is lying around.

PT: Music magazines.

Where is/are the most distant subscriber(s) from?

PT: Germany. And we once had an email from a photographer in Switzerland interested in contributing. I think he thought we were Austria’s # 1 roller derby magazine.

Can you tell us what the most difficult aspect of running HAM?

Minnie: Juggling HAM jobs (pun intended) on top of day jobs and still making attendance for the home team/travel team and staying involved in my league. Finding and keeping a good printer and dealing with the postage service has also been… challenging. When it’s deadline time we don’t get a lot of rest.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of running HAM?

PT: The nice comments that we receive and the support of the derby community. Seeing how excited people get when a new issue is coming out is really great.

Minnie: It’s also a creative outlet for us and somewhere for me to put my world famous dad jokes.

What’s the weirdest derby injury someone has submitted?

PT: Suffice to say we look forward to including a sealed section in the near future.

Where would you like to take HAM in the next 3 years?

Minnie: At the moment we’re really trying to focus on the magazine itself before exploring other avenues. But hopefully as we grow we will be able to expand.

What impact on the sport do you think the roller derby media teams are/will have in the next 3 years?

PT: Roller derby is a grassroots sport and I think roller derby owned media outlets have a unique insight into how the sport operates.

Minnie: Most mainstream outlets are more interested in spectacle while derby media is more focused on the sport. It’s so important for roller derby media to exist; it provides valuable links between leagues and players and helps foster that community spirit and sense of self. It also demonstrates a level of professionalism, the fact that Australian roller derby has its own podcast, website, magazine and online TV show.

What are your predictions and hopes for Australian roller derby in the next 3 years?

PT: I’m predicting the growth of junior roller derby, more leagues, increased spectators and roller derby recognised as an Olympic sport.

Minnie: I’m hoping for even more growth within the roller derby community, more state and national tournaments and opportunities for all roller derby leagues. It will be interesting to see how things develop with the signing of an agreement between WFTDA and Skate Australia and the forming of the national executive committee Roller Derby Australia.

Can you tell us what 2012 holds for HAM?

PT: A year of travel and excitement! We’re looking forward to the annual HAM Roll-a-thon (WA), Great Southern Slam, RollerCon USA, RollerCon Australia and interleague bouts.

Minnie: It’s going to be an action-packed year, there’s lots of change in the air but there’s also a sense of excitement. At the moment my eyes are on the Slam, I can’t wait to go back to the place where we launched the magazine and see how far everyone has come in just two years.

CCRG – Five star performance at the Black and White All Stars bout

There were two awesome bouts being held on the East coast of NSW on Saturday, the first was SRDL’s season opener, the other was CCRG’s Black & White All Stars bout. Despite having two big bouts on the same night there was still a massive and vocal crowd up on the Central Coast which was great to see. The bout also saw some guest skaters and Team Zebra from H*A*R*D along with NRDL’s Glitter N. Gore as benchie for the Black team and the ever amazing Mal Adjusted as commentator.

Both teams skated out to rapturous applause from the crowd and by the time the first jam started the place was absolutely buzzing. It went up a few notches as the White team tried to defend from the front by forming a wall. There were a lot of heavy hits with the Black teams West Side Gory absorbing a lot of heavy hits on her way to getting lead jammer. The white teams captain Ali-tude got completely smashed while her team mate AllureNKill was sent to the penalty box. The Black team struck the first blow as they scored an 8-0 jam.

The white team got lead jammer through Dobie Wan Kenobi but she was overtaken by her opposing jammer Ratbag who ended up outscoring her 4-1 as Dobie eventually called it off. The black team continued to turn the screw as Teeny Flirtini got lead jammer by going straight through the middle of the pack with Hazy Demon in close pursuit but she soon got sent to the penalty box for track cutting. Psyclone Tracey smashed Teeny with a great last line of defence hit as the white team built a wall at the front of the pack to stop Teeny from scoring more points but they eventually found themselves out of play. Teeny called off the jam just as Hazy Demon was making her way back onto the track as she picked up a 12-0 jam.

The Black team went with a no pack start as their jammer Mini Mayhem tore up the middle to get lead jammer to take advantage of the power jam. Mini Mayhem was doing well to avoid getting hit by Vixenation as Cherry smashed Matron of Pain out of the way to allow Mini Mayhem to get though and score a 10-0 jam.

Teeny Flirtini took on Alit-tude in the jammer battle. The Black teams Lola Ebola launched herself at Ali-tude to try and taken her down but Ali-tude kept herself up, however, she took a sharp turn around the bend and did her best Forrest Gump impersonation and kept going and almost landed in the Black teams bench. The white team continued with their tactic of having a wall at the front of the pack as both jammers went the opposite way in their quest to get lead jammer. West Side Gory went on the outside but Hazy Demon beat her by going on the inside. The Black teams BloodRed Penny put Hazy Demon on the floor with a great hit who called off the jam and picked up a 8-4 jam as she waved to the crowd while she skated past.

The Black teams captain KiKi Chaos tried to restore some order by getting lead jammer and after some great footwork she managed to get through again before calling it off as the Black team increased their lead to 41-14. The pack went with a slower start before Matron of Pain and MelTeaser were on their way. Cherry was skating backwards and organising her side like a conductor but that didn’t stop Matron from powering through on the inside as MelTeaser was struggling to get through the pack. There was a massive collision as Matron, Lola and Cherry Chaser all fell which resulted in both Matron and Cherry Chaser being sent to the penalty box but there was a loud cheer from the crowd when it was revealed that Matron had scored an 11-0 jam to cut the deficit to 41-27.

No surprise that the black team went with a no pack start while the white team had their jammer in the box. The white team had their wall at the front of the pack which did a good job of stopping Mini Mayhem from getting through but they eventually found themselves out of play and had to let her go through. AllureNKill got her with a great hit but then the black team sent in reinforcements with Ratbag and Shell Destroyer coming in to break up the white wall for Mini to get through who then called off the jam as Matron came back on the track as she picked up a 10-0 jam.

There was some jammer on jammer action as Teeny and Dobie took each other out which resulted in Teeny being sent to the penalty box. There were skaters falling down all over the track which opened up spaces for Dobie to get through. Cherry smashed Vixenation and then also took out Dobie who ended up in the wall of the building and called off the jam after picking up 9 points for the white team.

It was still a power jam for the white team with the pack going with a very slow start. Ratbag took out both the jammer and Razooka Bazooka as the black team formed a wall at the front of the pack. The white team managed to trap a bunny as they tried to go with a no pack situation and it worked as they picked up 5 more points. Slowly but surely they were chipping away at the black teams lead with the momentum clearly in their corner.

Teeny and Ali-tude sprinted to try and get lead jammer with Ali-tude winning the race as she caught Lola napping on the inside line and went straight past her. It was a smash and grab sort of jam as she picked up some quick points and called off the jam to make it a 10 point game 51-41 in what was becoming a great comeback for the white team.

West Side Gory couldn’t take advantage of two white team skaters falling down as both to get lead jammer as Matron eventually got through first and called off the jam as she picked up some points but West Side Gory had the last laugh as she managed to sneak through and pick up some points to make it a tied jam at 3-3.

AllureNKill pushed Mini Mayhem out of her way to get lead jammer over Ratbag who was eventually sent to the penalty box. The White team appear to have fully woken up from their slumber with everyone working in sync offensively and defensively. Ace O’Breaks eventually stopped AllureNKill with a great hit who then called off the jam to rapturous applause from the crowd as she scored a 15-0 jam to give the White team the lead for the first time 59-54.

There was some confusion over the start of the next jam over who was supposed to be on the track. Lola smashed Dobie but she weathered the hit enough to go on and get lead jammer. A no pack was called and she went straight through to score a grand slam to further extend their lead 64-54.

The white team took advantage of the power jam as they went with a no pack start which allowed Matron to get lead jammer. The black team formed a wall at the front of the pack to try and stop Matron from getting through as MelTeaser stopped Matron just as Ratbag was coming back on the track who then called it off after picking up another 3 points for her side.

Ali-tude and Lock Stock Lulu formed a great partnership to stop BloodRed Penny in her tracks which helped Hazy Demon to sneak through on the inside to get lead jammer. Hazy then showed some great offensive skills as she picked off the three skater black team wall at the front of the pack one by one to get past them. With the black team chasing the game the crowd got behind them as Kiki Chaos got lead jammer but Matron was on her tail the entire time. In fact by the time Kiki called off the jam Matron got past her and ended up outscoring her 4-2. After the white team having all the momentum the black team were eager to stop them and they did as the white team found themselves down one blocker as Teeny Flirtini used amazing strength to get the better of AllureNKill and outscore her 4-3 with the crowd cheering her on.

With ten seconds left in the first half Ratbag got off to the better start. It got even better when Bin Rollin’ was sent to the penalty box for low blocking. You know when you can see a move build up on the track but some of the skaters don’t see it coming so you just wait for the explosive moment? Well the first half ended with such a moment. Ali-tude was lining up Ratbag for a massive hit, what she didn’t see was Cherry coming up on her left hand side like a shark ready to strike and strike her she did, she had no idea what hit her. Ratbag eventually called off the jam scoring 8 points as the white team held onto their lead 78-71.

With the lead and momentum changing hands throughout the first half it was all set up for another cracking half. The crowd couldn’t get enough!

The white team started off the half with their jammer and a blocker in the bin while the black team had a blocker in the bin. Hazy Demon came back on the track and managed to get lead jammer as some GREAT defence by her blockers kept stopping Ratbag from getting through. There was an almighty hit which saw the entire black team go down along with Hazy Demon who was then sent to the penalty box which allowed Ratbag free to pick up some points and she did as she scored a 9-2 jam which tied the scores 80-80.

Teeny Flirtini showed off her great jamming skills as she knocked down Cyndi Slaughter to get lead jammer. Unfortunately she called off the jam too late as Hazy Demon picked up some last second points as the black team held on for a 1 point lead. AllureNKill was imposing herself on Mini Mayhem as she started hitting her from the start of the jammer whistle but it didn’t work as AllureNKill found herself caught in the pack as Mini got lead jammer and picked up 6 points. Was momentum back with the black team?

The pack went for a slow start as the white team went with their tried and trusted wall at the front of the pack but West Side Gory managed to go straight through them but it was by illegal means as she was sent to the penalty box. Her team mate Ratbag soon joined her when she managed to trip herself up and then got done for a low block. Apple Ya’Hair was holding back Cherry which allowed Ali-tude to get through and score a 9 point jam as the lead changed hands again to give the white team a 93-90 lead. This bout was end to end and left the crowd on the edge of their seats. It was great to watch.

Lola was caught by Hazy Demon while Teeny Flirtini was bouncing off blockers like she was in a pinball machine as both jammers fell down while coming around the bend but Teeny found herself sent to the penalty box. The black team formed a wall at the front of the pack to try and stop Hazy Demon from getting through with Cherry behind them in the sweeper role as she took out Hazy Demon then MelTeaser got a hit in on her too.

Ratbag got lead jammer as her team mate Teeny Flirtini tried to help break up the white teams wall at the front of the pack for Ratbag to get through and it ended up being extremely successful as Ratbag scored a grand slam to tie the scores 99-99.

The black teams Hell’a Trix LeStrange was doing a great job cleaning up at the back and stopping AllureNKill which allowed West Side Gory to get lead jammer. She took advantage of two white team skaters falling and got past them as she picked up 4 points and called off the jam. The black team further increased their slender lead when Mini Mayhem picked up 3 points as Matron found herself stuck behind Ratbag which resulted in the white team calling a timeout.

MelTeaser went to lay a hit on Dobie then ended up doing a transition move and stacked it but then her jammer stacked it over her but Dobie ended up calling off the jam for a nil scoring jam. The jams were getting shorter in length as both sides tried to pick any points they could and then call it off before the opposition jammer could score any points. The bout was due another high scoring jam and it came for the white team in the form of Dobie. Cherry and her jammer were both sent to the penalty box and Dobie kept getting past the black teams blockers one by one. By the end of it she clocked up a massive 18-0 jam to give the white team a 123-112 lead.

Both sides were throwing everything at each other. Both sides formed a wall, the black team at the front and the white team at the back as both jammers Razooka Bazooka and Teeny Flirtini were stuck behind the opposing walls. Teeny Flirtini got through first and picked up 3 points for her side to cut the deficit to 126-115 with three minutes left on the clock.

West Side Gory was THIS close to getting through first and getting lead jammer but got pushed back at the last second as AllureNKill squeezed through the pack first. There were falls galore with the black teams jammer and blocker sent to the box and were joined by a white teams blocker as AllureNKill picked up 7 points. With 1:18 left on the clock Matron made the most of her power jam and all the gaps left in the pack. It didn’t even matter that some of her team mates were falling over themselves as she helped seal up a win for the white team with a 9 point jam to bring the final score to 142-118 in what was a highly entertaining, edge of your seat bout.

WOLLONGONG ILLAWARA ROLLER DERBY

2012 SEASON – BOUT 2

Steel City Derby Dolls vs. Queen Bees (VRDL)

Saturday 28 April 2012 – Doors Open 6.30 First Whistle is 7pm.

The Hub – University of Wollongong, Northfields Ave, Gwynneville

__________________________________________________________________

Wollongong Illawarra Roller Derby (WIRD) presents a special interleague bout with interstate guests the VRDL Queen Bees

We told you WIRD was going to shake things up this season! We’re thrilled to announce that our second pre-season bout will pit WIRD’s premier travel team, the Steel City Derby Dolls against Victorian Roller Derby League travel team, the Queen Bees.

The Dolls are a dynamite blend of the best of our home teams, the Vixens and the Vipers. This is a team that combines strength and speed in equal measure, with the jamming power of Chakram, iKandy and Manic Bullet and the unbreakable blocking power of White Hawk and Vishious Ness. For extra excitement there’s the hit AND run action of stalwarts DropBear and Underbelly Morelli.

Taking on the Queen Bees will be a formidable task: VRDL are the Australian league champions and currently have another travel team competing in the USA Dust Devil Tournament, winning their first game against Assassination City and moving on to the semifinals. VRDL are also the first Australian league to have gained an apprenticeship with the US based Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). The Queen Bees include the best up-and-coming talent the VRDL has to offer!

This game will be like no other derby bout seen in Wollongong so far. Expect a snappy pace and some hard hitting but the winning team will also need to be strategic and able to adapt gameplay on the fly.

Prepaid Tickets – $10 adult, $5 kids (6-12), free for 5 and under (+ additional booking fee for online tickets). Where else can you get this kind of action and a family night out for those prices?

Tickets available online from http://tickets.greentix.com/event/223168
or in person at local businesses  - see www.wird.com.au for locations

Tickets will be more expensive on the door so get yours early. Suicide seating (trackside) is for over 18’s only.

About Roller Derby
Roller derby involves two teams of four blockers skating round an elliptical track, while a point scorer from each team (“the jammer”) tries to fight their way through, gaining a point for each opposing player they pass. Trips, grabs, elbows, headbutts and fist-fighting are all illegal – but spine-crunching shoulder barges, hip checks and booty blocks are totally legit.

NRDL – Hellcats claw their way to another series victory.

The first bout of the season went to the Harbour Hellcats 143-115 in what was an absolute slug fest of a bout. The Hellcats only needed one more victory to tie up their third successive series victory but the Fort Smashleys never skate away from a battle so this was promising to be another cracking bout with plenty to play for. To make the bout more special four skaters were making their bouting debuts – Rum n Rola and Tiny Tempah for the Hellcats and JacKnife and Nay Palm for the Smashleys.

The place was absolutely packed to the rafters and looked as though they managed to fit in more people than their last bout the previous month. It was another sell out which would have pleased the guys at NRDL that there is such huge support for them up there.

The Smashleys were hit with a setback as GodJilla Sold Separately was a late withdrawal due to illness. She’s got bit of a fan base up in Newcastle. It was funny hearing people walk past disappointed when they discovered she wasn’t bouting. On the loss of GodJilla just before the start of the bout her team mate Beaver Destruction said ‘we had to try and remain focused on the task ahead. One player does not make a team, but GodJilla seems to add a glue like zest to the Fort Smashleys. That’s why she’s our Captain. We were lucky to have reserves. Sweet Sar’ender stepped in and although she is a COMPLETLEY different player she still gave the team a Jamming boost’.

The bout started off in funny fashion as the Hellcats Defcon Dani absorbed hits from the Smashleys pack and managed to get lead jammer but then stacked it coming around the bend while showboating for the crowd which allowed DangeRass to catch up so Defcon Dani called the jam off. In the next jam the Smashleys Hippy Highrolla got lead jammer by doing her favoured move of going along the outside line as Babycakes struggled to get through the pack. By the time she did Hippy picked up 4 points and called off the jam.

The Smashleys continued their early dominance as Lady Quirkinator and De-Bri formed a wall at the front of the pack to stop Brigand Strong from getting through as the Smashleys picked up another three points to make the score 7-0. Just as the Smashleys were in the driving seat the Hellcats clawed back first with Susy Pow as she picked up two points, then Defcon Dani joined in as she amazed the crowd with her amazing speed and agility to get lead jammer and pick up five points as Belt’er Goodrem struggled to catch up after she taken out by a hit from Brigand Strong.

The game was being played at a fast pace and good discipline as neither side had anyone sent to the penalty box but that quickly changed as Hippy Highrolla, Susy Pow and Lady Quirkinator were all sent to the penalty box for various majors. With spaces opening up on the track and ghost points applying the Hellcats Babycakes was picking up points like they were going out of fashion as she picked up a 15-0 jam to give the Hellcats the lead for the first time 22-7.

Although Jilla wasn’t bouting she still made her presence felt cheering from the sideline and letting her feelings known about supposed incorrect decisions by Team Zebra that those of us around her were in danger of going deaf haha. Hippy was doing her talking on the track as she made her move along the outside line then cut through the gap in the middle as she also avoided a massive air swing by Susy Pow to pick up a 9-3 jam. Speaking of Susy Pow she was looking notably different with contacts on instead of her trademark glasses which allowed her to see better which wasn’t a good sign for the Smashleys.

There was a great battle going on between DangeRass and Defcon Dani when they were both jamming. In one jam Danger managed to go straight through the Hellcats wall and get lead jammer as Defcon was all but through but Defcon’s no slouch in the speed department either as she quickly caught up to Danger who had to call off the jam.

Image

Susy was slowing down the pack as Belt’er got caught out for an out of play penalty and was quickly followed by Lady Quirkinator, De-Bri and JacKnife to the penalty box which allowed the Hellcats to score a 19-0 jam and increase their lead to 44-16. In the next jam Belt’er had her eye on Susy as she stopped her but fell down as the Smashleys Sweet Sar’ender got lead jammer but quickly called off the jam as Susy overtook her.

The Smashleys Beaver Destruction was back in her first bout for the year as she lined up on the jammer line against Defcon Dani and then went on to dazzle the crowd as she showed great agility to get around Brigand Strong and get lead jammer to take the scores to 50-18. After a lot of hard work to try and get through the pack Babycakes eventually got lead jammer as opposing jammer Sweet Sar’ender absorbed a hit from Susy but couldn’t stop Babycakes from scoring a 4-0 jam who called off the jam after she fell.

The Smashleys went for an extremely slow start as Brigand and Belt’er lined up on the jammer line. It was looking promising for the Smashleys as Brigand Strong got sent to the penalty box. Back on the track Belt’er was forced to fight to try and get through the pack as the Hellcats defence made it near impossible for her to get through. She had such a determined look on her face that it was hard not to live through each hit and battle to get through the Hellcats defence from the sidelines. Despite Belt’er’s best efforts to pick up points she was eventually sent to the penalty box for a high block. Brigand Strong came on and went straight through the Smashleys wall as the jam went for the full two minutes.

The Hellcats were all lining up at the pivot line as they went with a no pack start. Reggie Ramjet was getting in front of Belt’er and not letting her through, she eventually got through but the next time Belt’er came around Reggie had lined her up and as they went around the bend Reggie absolutely nailed her. It appeared that Belt’er hit her head as she fell, and she did not look in good shape. The crowd went from cheering to being completely silent instantaneously when they realised Belt’er wasn’t getting up. Thankfully after receiving some help from the St John’s workers she was back on her skates which got a massive cheer from the crowd.

It was back to business as the Hellcats found themselves two blockers and a jammer short as they were all in the penalty box. With a no pack start Sweet Sar’ender got lead jammer and skated her heart out. Susy Pow was back on the track and then back in the box just as quickly for a track cut. Baroness von Brutal and Brigand Strong were trying to stop Sweet Sar’ender at the front of the pack with Brigand Strong eventually taking her down but not before she scored a 12-0 jam to cut the deficit to 54-32 with 5 ½ minutes left on the clock in the first half.

The Smashleys were throwing everything at the Hellcats. Hippy got lead jammer as DangeRass and Beaver Destruction were keeping Babycakes back. It was then De-Bri’s turn as she bided her time and struck at the right moment to get lead jammer as Brigand Strong found herself stuck behind the formidable wall of Nay Palm and De-Bri. Susy Pow did a fancy transition and hit on Schmierer but it had no effect as she kept skating on. Susy was having trouble getting through the pack and eventually took out Schmierer who called off the jam after picking up another three points for the Smashleys.

Image

Momentum was all with the Smashleys but there was one final twist to the half. The jam got off to a very slow start as the Smashleys Calamity Cutthroat was struggling to get through the pack while Babycakes was being stopped by Lady Quirkinator but she finally managed to get past her. Babycakes then started picking up points before she got wiped out by Broken Arrow and called off the jam to bring the half time score to 65-42 for the Hellcats.

The half time entertainment was provided by Repeater who played a rocking good set and had people tapping their feet to the beat and one kid playing air guitar as he walked past. As for teams the Smashleys led by captain GodJilla discussed what areas they needed to improve to try and turn not just the game around but the series too. As team coach for the Hellcats Susy Pow was a little worried about the momentum that the Smashleys built up just before half time but wasn’t too worried as there was less pressure on them and they were already one game up in the series.

The second half saw both Sweet Sar’ender and Babycakes struggle to get through the fiercely defended pack but they both managed to get through the pack almost simultaneously with Sweet Sar’ender calling off the jam before either player could pick up any points. DangeRass and Brigand Strong were both surrounded by Hellcats as they battled to get lead jammer but Brigand Strong won the battle but called the jam off to keep the score at 69-43.

Susy and De-Bri took each other on with Susy getting lead jammer by coming through on the inside of the pack and De-Bri got sent to the penalty box for a low block. No fewer than three times in the jam Calamity Cutthroat was the last line of defence for the Smashleys but each time she laid a hit on Susy she came off second best and fell as Susy went on to score a massive 19-0 jam to increase the Hellcats lead to 88-43.

Brigand Strong smashed Hippy out of the way but DangeRass and Lady Quirkinator who formed a great defensive partnership that night completely sandwiched Defcon Dani. De-Bri looked as though she had springs in her legs as she was back on her feet as soon as she got knocked down each time.

Next up came my favourite jam for the evening. The Smashleys had a wall at the front as DangeRass knocked down Susy Pow. Sweet Sar’ender used her speed to get through the pack. DangeRass had her eye on Susy the entire jam and kept getting in her way, it was positional blocking at its best then Lady Quirkinator took over the stop Susy Pow duties. Amongst all this Sweet Sar’ender was on fire, whether she was dodging hits, sneaking through gaps, she was unstoppable, a little pocket rocket. The massive cheer she got from the crowd when it was revealed she scored an 8-0 jam was more than deserved.

Image

Both sides went with a slow start as Hippy Highrolla went straight through the middle to get lead jammer. Babycakes saw Calamity Cutthroat lining her up for a hit so she dodged her so that Calamity got nothing but air and then the floor. Reggie Ramjet got sent to the penalty box for a head shot on Hippy as the Smashleys cut the deficit to 96-54. The Smashleys tried to make the most of their numerical advantage by going with a no pack start but the awesome skater that is Brigand Strong surprised them all by going straight through the pack to get lead jammer. DangeRass was hot on her tail and it was that amazing determination of hers that helped her outscore Brigand Strong 3-1 when she called the jam off.

There was some jammer on jammer action as Susy was stopped in her tracks by De-Bri and then got sent to the box for track cutting but then it went pear-shaped for the Smashleys as De-Bri was sent to the bin first but then she was followed by Beaver Destruction, Broken Arrow and Belt’er for blocking Susy when there was no pack. Having lots of players in the penalty box was hurting the Smashleys and it reflected on the score board. As the official time out dragged on Jilla made her feelings known from the sidelines which got a laugh from those of us around her.

Back to the action and the Hellcats went with a no pack start as they made the most of their numerical advantage. Belt’er and DangeRass tried their best to stop Defcon Dani who called off the jam just as De-Bri was back on the track but not before she picked up a 5-0 jam. Hippy was trying to outsmart the Hellcats defence but Babycakes snuck through to get lead jammer and another 4 points while Hippy tried arguing for a point but to no avail.

DangeRass was directing her blockers into formation but Defcon Dani snuck past undetected by the space DangeRass was leaving behind her as the Hellcats increased their lead to 110-59. The Hellcats kept turning the screw as Brigand Strong stayed back and let Hippy do the hard work of trying to get through the pack and then snuck past her. Calamity got sent to the box for hitting Brigand Strong when there was no pack as both sides picked up 4 points.

Babycakes quickly got lead jammer over De-Bri who was trying to catch up as the Smashleys built a wall in front of the pack and tried to stop Babycakes who eventually called off the jam just as her team mate Rum n Rola was sent to the box. Beaver Destruction was doing a great job of stopping Defcon Dani as DangeRass eventually got through the pack and then showed off great footwork to get around C-Bomber as she scored a grand slam to bring the score to 118-70 with 5 ½ minutes left.

Hippy got through the pack as Sweet Sar’ender and Lady Quirkinator held Babycakes back but she managed to finally get around them and make it a 4-4 jam. Brigand Strong jumped the apex on the first bend to get lead jammer and eventually called off the jam but got caught out again by DangeRass who outscored her 3-1.

The Smashleys were throwing everything at the Hellcats as De-Bri took out Defcon Dani with Sweet Sar’ender getting down low to avoid hits and get lead jammer. Lady Quirkinator was providing great defensive cover as she took out Hellcat skaters to clear a path for Sweet Sar’ender to get through which got massive cheers from the crowd. Beaver Destruction joined the party as she knocked down Defcon Dani who was looking completely knackered by this stage. Sweet Sar’ender managed to score a whopping big 17-0 jam to make the score 123-94 with 9 seconds left on the clock as the officials called a time out while the Smashleys got the crowd cheering wildly. Could the Smashleys do the mother of all comebacks, or was it too little too late?

Image

Hippy Highrolla vs Babycakes. The Smashleys went with a no pack start as the Hellcats formed a wall at the front of the pack. There was a loud cheer from the crowd for Hippy, everyone loves an underdog. DangeRass was stopping Babycakes but Hippy fell and then sat down on the track as she was stopped by Dino la Rouge and Baroness von Brutal. Was she hurt or was she completely knackered? She called off the jam when the better option may have been to pass the star to DangeRass who was the pivot in the final jam. The final score was 127-98 for the Hellcats and three consecutive series victories which was well deserved. Defcon Dani got skater of the bout for the Hellcats with Sweet Sar’ender getting it for the Smashleys both thoroughly deserved. Well done guys!

Debutant Rum n Rola said she was feeling nervous in the lead up to the bout but the professional approach that the Hellcats take to their bouts helped calm her nerves. She needn’t have worried, she put in a good, solid debut who will no doubt end up becoming another thorn in the side for the Smashleys.

The third and final bout for the series is on the 19th May with tickets already on sale. There will be more skaters making their debuts. With their last few bouts selling out and the likes of Belt’er and Booga playing there is no such thing as a dead rubber bout. It’ll no doubt be another smash-tastic and entertaining bout. Be there! NRDL will also be participating at TGSS, and their representative side the Dockyard Dames will be taking on CRDL in an event which you don’t want to miss!

Miss Be Shavin’! Tasmanian Roller Derby’s World’s Greatest Shave Extravaganza!

What does hot pants, bald heads and the 24th of March have in common? Miss Be Shavin’! Tasmanian Roller Derby’s World’s Greatest Shave Extravaganza!

All four leagues from both ends of the state came together for a massive North vs. South double header to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. Not to mention this was the first time all four leagues would be bouting together under one roof! It was also the debut bout for the state’s newest ladies on the track, the Devil State Derby League. They competed in the first bout against the seasoned Convict City Rollers from the South. Also from the north, the oldest league in the state, Van Diemen Rollers faced off against Hobart’s South Island Sirens.

It was not just the derby community who showed their charitable side: support from community sponsors including the Derwent Entertainment Centre and Staging Connections allowed for an amazing venue and audio visuals unprecedented in the Tasmanian derby world.

The first bout was Devil State Vs Convicts. The Convicts started incredibly, using their strong experience to gain a 50 point advantage at half time. But Devil State were not disheartened by their first half flattening and came back out with vengeance to take back control in the second half. The Convicts held on though for a comfortable win 158-99.

Next up was the World’s Greatest Shave. Splatterberry from the South Island Sirens, Vanessa Shredgrave and Carmen GetStitches from the Convict City Rollers, and Zigi Ska Bust from the Van Diemen Rollers, all offered up their locks for the shave after weeks of tireless fundraising. As did local artist Kim Foale with hair down to her booty who raised a massive $3000 herself before the first wheels hit the track. The ever brave ‘Heroes for Kids’ came out for the shave; Batman and Spiderman there to fight the evil of Darth Vader and a new super villain; the hostess for the evening miss Ravin Miss Behavin.

The second bout followed on in the same vein, with the South yet again dominating. It was a tough fight and despite some very hard hits and fancy footwork from VDR the Sirens made it hard for them to score. First half saw the Sirens up 77 – 18. The second half was a bit easier on the scoring which seemed to result from heavier penalties on both sides. The Sirens maintained their dominance and grew their lead to 169 – 47 at the end of the bout.

The real winner from the evening though was the Leukaemia Foundation. The fundraising money is still being counted and tallied but the total efforts of the Tasmanian Roller Derby Team look set to be over ten thousand dollars! In real terms $2000 can fund all costs for a major research into cures for a week and $1200 can provide transport to treatment for 200 patients for a month. So the money raised will make a huge difference to those living with blood cancers.

This fact strikes close to home for organisers of the event, Siren’s skater Splatterberry and her partner, Siren’s Benchie Dr Infinite. With Dr Infinite having been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in 2009 and still undergoing treatment for the blood cancer, the pair have a great appreciation for the work done by the Leukaemia Foundation.

You can still show your support to your derby sisters across the strait by donating online my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/tasmanianrollerderby. And guess what? Tasmanian Roller Derby is close to being one of the top 100 Shave Teams in the country! Your support can help get us there and show Australia what derby girls are truly made of!

Bloody Sundaes dominate at Perth Roller Derby season opener

A new venue and a near capacity crowd greeted Perth Roller Derby for the league’s first bout of the season on Saturday. The excitement was palpable as Bloody Sundaes went up against Mistresses of Mayhem once again, the Mistresses still the underdog but eager for a win. Both teams had a healthy injection of fresh blood making its presence felt, along with old favourites who continued to impress with their strength and agility.

Ja'Main Fear and Annie Thingoes

The skaters worked some nerves out of the system with an initial lightning fast jam between Sundaes veteran Morgan Wildchild and Mistresses’ jammer extraordinaire Mary Fagdalene, in which Mistresses took an early lead before the jam was called off. Next up Mistresses’ Ja’Main Fear jammed against Sundaes’ Annie Thingoes, both are physical and agile and as Fear called it off it was clear both teams meant business.  Mistresses were able to carve themselves out a slim lead against Sundaes and with the contribution of jammers Fear, Fagdalene and the ever entertaining Freyda Nuffin’ kept it for a large portion of the first half. Sundaes were determined to try new tactics but initially couldn’t make them pay off against the whip-fast Mistresses. Minnie Screwdriver, Thingoes and the unstoppable Wheels McCoy were strong for the Sundaes and finally their slow back walls and goating started to pay off as they went into half time with a narrow lead 64 to Mistresses’ 57.

Minie Screwdriver and Freyda Nuffin'

The second half had moments of brilliance from the Mistresses, but it belonged to the Sundaes as the team’s control of the pack speed came to the fore. Aside from an awkward illegal star pass late in the bout Sundaes could do no wrong, even with skaters in the box they kept the lid on the Mistresses score. Five minutes left in the bout Sundaes had a comfortable lead 157 to Mistresses 86 but to their credit the underdogs kept fighting to narrow the margin. Skater Maximum Casualty proved effective both blocking and jamming for Mistresses and Fagdalene made it all look easy as she carved through Sundaes’ walls. Meanwhile Thingoes donned the Sundaes jammer panty more in the second half as did stalwart Megaton Son. Mistresses regained some ground in the points tally, but Sundaes were just too strong, ending the bout 173 to Mistresses 116.

Mistresses' Maximum Casualty breaks free from the pack.

Maximum Casualty, who proved her talents as a good all-rounder for her team, was named Mistresses’ most valued player while Megaton Son took it out for the Sundaes. Of the new team members Sundaes’ Cirque Du Slayher, Cradle of MILF and transfer skater Edward Slaughterhands and Mistresses’ Acute Terror and transfer skater Cherry Flips particularly impressed.

Perth Roller Derby’s next bout is on May 26.

Name: Pana Doll (Nurse by Day – Derby Diva by Night)

League: Bundaberg City Rollers Inc

Team(s): The ZomBeez

Skate set up: Riedell She Devils – and I swap and change my wheels between Atom G-Rods and Radar Tuner Wheels.

When did you start skating? Started recreational skating when I was 6 years old, Awww…..brings back some old school 80’s memories of skating to tunes like Wake me Up Before you Go Go……..and Hey Mickey………………..Ooohhh Yeahhh!!

Did you have any prior athletic experience? Yes it’s called the Bend and Lift – Bend Arm to pick up Bourbon can….. Lift to mouth…………hahaha …….no seriously Gymnastics and Dancing throughout my teen years.

Tell us a little bit about your derby journey. My derby journey has been a very exciting and challenging one so far and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me as both a Bouting skater and derby skating coach and also for derby as a whole……..I started derby with Sun state Roller Girls (SSRG) in Brisbane …, I moved from Brisbane to Bundaberg in QLD 12 months ago – where there was NO DERBY…….What the????………

Obviously a derby girl through and through I thought to myself “there is no way I could live in a city that had no derby”……..and that was the moment that Bundaberg City Rollers Inc.……was born.  I approached the local skating rink and asked if I could try and start up a Roller derby League here in Bundaberg……..they said yes………and I guess the rest is history………having only beginner experience myself at the time, it has been an extremely challenging and rewarding experience. Luckily for us we have had many derby peeps who have offered assistance during this time, and without them none of it would have been possible, so Kudos to them, (they know who they are) We had our first bout in October of 2011 against Gladstone Roller Derby League of which our team The ZomBeez led with a score of 105 – 92. A brilliant achievement for our first year.

Tell us about the first derby bout you ever saw. If Bouting, please also tell us a little bit about your first bout. First bout I ever saw – SSRG at beenleigh Arena – Licorice Short Shorts Vs. Golden Roughs. I was in absolute awe for the entire bout, I had to hold my chin to stop it from dropping on the floor – I remember this very well as this was the day that I knew derby life was for me, I was hooked – I didn’t believe in love at first sight until this moment………….hahaha and that was it I had fallen in love with derby instantly.

Who has inspired you to play derby? Who are your favourite Aussie (& international) skaters? Aussie Inspirations – XL and Chop Chop (SSRG).  International Inspirations – Suzy Hotrod (Gotham) both for her awesome derby skills and her wicked guitar riffs!!

How much time do you put into derby each week? I live, eat, breath, sleep derby and I put in at least 28 hrs. a week 8-12 hrs. on skates and the rest of the time off skates, organising and researching training plans etc……we do skates on Windsor Pilates as part of our training regime which is great for the thighs, helps us to get down low and stay there !! We have also started using Football Crash pads to practice hip checks etc……our skaters love it!

What are your favourite wheel s to use and why? What other gear do you swear by? My Fave wheels are Radar Tuner – Reds, I also like Atom G-Rods. Gear I swear by………….a really awesome mouth guard – I recommend having a dentist fit you with one…….sure they are more expensive but a skate to the teeth is a more expensive process then a professionally fitted mouth guard and can’t live without my Park pads – I Love Them – they are like pillows for my knees………lol.

Where do you see/want to see Australian Roller Derby in five year’s time? Huge…….lol………Televised…….I would love to see some purpose built derby facilities with some Banked Tracks being built, it’s such a fast growing sport ……….Olympics??………Hell Yeah – Bring It On!!

Do you have any advice for those interested in volunteering and/or playing roller derby? Give it go – Once you go Derby you never go back!! When you buy your skates – do yourself a favor and discard those Radar Caymen Wheels.

WIRD – Bridezillas leaving Black Widows in their wake.

Tags

The stage was set: WIRD bouting back at the University of Wollongong Sports Hub, a large queue of people waiting outside for the doors to open but there was a twist. This bout wasn’t the usual Vipers vs Vixens intraleague bout instead we were going to see the Black Widows take on the Bridezillas. Not only were there all new line up’s but both sides only had 8 players each! The reason for all this was that WIRD are preparing for TGSS so they were using the first two bouts of the season to prepare for the tournament. According to Courtney Lovebite ‘Although both teams wanted to win, the focus was really to have fun and play with skaters that you normally wouldn’t play with during the home team season.’  Fear not Viper and Vixen fans both sides will be back in action on the 26th May, mark that date in your diaries!

As the people settled into their seats the commentating duo of Big Kahuna and Holly kept the crowd entertained and informed. The atmosphere levels were cranked high as the skaters made their way onto the track and went through their safety checks. They love their Team Zebra down in the ‘gong especially Señor Whippy who was getting lots of extra cheers from the crowd!

Image

The first jam may have started slow but it didn’t take long to pick up as Bridezillas jammer iKandy was sent to the penalty box but opposing jammer Penny Nartsy didn’t get lead jammer on her initial pass. Penny did however manage to pick up a grand slam but both White Hawk and Penny were sent to the penalty box in quick succession with iKandy coming back onto the track and nailing Peaches Obscene as the Black Widows raced to a 7-2 lead.

The Black Widows were down two players in the box and it didn’t get any better when Chakram lined up on the jammer line for the Bridezillas as they went with a no pack start to let Chakram loose. Chakram helped to even the score 7-7 and called off the jam just as Penny Nartsy came back onto the track. It was more of the same for the Bridezillas in the next jam as they capitalised on Black Widows having skaters in the penalty box, this time it was iKandy picking up points despite being taken out by Underbelly Morelli around one of the bends to increase the Bridezillas lead to 17-11.

Always the entertainer, Black Widows’ Janis Job’em got the crowd going by putting on a show as she skated past them. Her team mate Manic Bullet managed to zip through the pack leaving opposing jammer iKandy in her wake as she picked up a quick 4 points and called off the jam. White Hawk smashed DropBear out of the way but Chakram managed to get through the gap. Despite their jammer being in the penalty box Courtney Lovebite and Janis were dishing out hits at the front of the pack to keep the Bridezillas at bay.

Janis lined up on the jammer line for the first time of the night which got a big cheer from the crowd. The Black Widows demonstrated great pack work to stop Bridezillas jammer Demander and eventually get her sent to the penalty box, not that Janis needed any extra help as she was showing off her great agility skills to get through the pack while holding off iKandy before getting taken out by a illegal hit from DropBear as she picked up a 10-0 jam and called it off.

White Hawk was at her destructive best as she destroyed the Bridezillas to make space for her jammer Penny Nartsy to get through and then gave her a push to get her on her way. Not for the first time in the bout there were plenty of hits and falls from both sides which proved pretty entertaining for the crowd.

The momentum was with the Black Widows despite having a player in the box. Manic Bullet made the most of the Bridezillas having 2 blockers in the box as she did a quick smash and grab and picked up another 4 points to increase the Black Widows lead to 45-37 as the Bridezillas called a timeout with Team Zebra also calling a timeout.

Image

The hits, falls and trips to the penalty box were coming through thick and fast for both sides as White Hawk took her third trip to the box and was quickly followed by iKandy and one of her blockers. Underbelly Morelli was clocking up points on the track but then found herself sent to the box which allowed iKandy to come back on and try and score some much needed points to claw back the score to 57-41 but not before she got smashed by Kat 0’9 Tails.

This bout was a very hard hitting affair and the Black Widows were starting to feel the effects as Manic Bullet passed the star to her pivot but got smashed in the rib area and was left clutching her ribs for the duration of the jam as the Bridezillas picked up another 7 points. In the next jam Black Widows jammer Peaches Obscene was left grimacing after another hard hit from the Bridezillas pack. Both Peaches and opposing jammer iKandy kept rotating in and out of the penalty box as Peaches was sent to the box for a major track cut, iKandy followed her for use of forearms but then Peaches went back to the box for re-entering the pack incorrectly. By the end of the jam the Bridezillas scored an 18-2 jam to give them the lead again 66-59.

The first half ended with Peaches pushing opposing jammer iKandy into her own pack as she finished the half strongly grabbing a 4-0 jam to take the score to 66-63 for the Bridezillas in what was an extremely hard fought and thoroughly entertaining half of derby. With the momentum swinging both ways the second half was shaping up to be an absolute cracker!

The Black Widows were off the block first but in what appeared to be a rehearsed move by the Bridezillas iKandy passed the star to her pivot DropBear right from the start of the jam as they drew first blood scoring a 4-3 jam. The lead changed hands numerous times at the start of the second half as Penny Nartsy scored a 4-1 jam while iKandy was stuck behind the Black Widows wall. iKandy had further misery as she was once again stuck behind the strong Widows wall of defence with Manic Bullet this time picking up another 4 points to extend their lead to 75-70.

Image

The Bridezillas were left with only one blocker when DropBear was sent to the box for not having her mouthguard on but that didn’t stop Demander from getting lead jammer despite the massive numerical disadvantage, not only that she scored a 3-0 jam as her opposing jammer Underbelly Morelli was sent to the box.

The Bridezillas went with an extremely slow start to allow some of their blockers back onto the track and after hard work by iKandy to get through the pack and get led jammer she quickly found herself to the penalty box. Underbelly Morelli was getting lots of attention by the Bridezilla wall of two at the front of the pack but eventually they found themselves out of play and had to let Morelli through and go on to score a 9-2 jam to give the black Widows a lead of 84-75 as an official timeout was called.

There was no shortage of action as the Black Widows were holding a strong wall of resistance at the front of the pack with Janis tucked in behind them yelling out instructions like a conductor. Penny Nartsy got lead jammer while Chakram was stuck behind the Black Widows wall. Penny was then sent to the box as Chakram was finding gaps in the pack and going straight through. The Widows then found themselves two blockers short as they were sent to the box. The Bridezillas excellent defence then stopped the Widows blockers from getting to their jammer. Janis Job’em got back onto the track and knocked Chakram down with an almighty hit which got a big roar of applause from the crowd. The Bridezillas wrestled back the lead with a 19-2 jam to make the score 93-86.

Manic Bullet tried to restore order as she left two Bridezilla blockers completely flat footed. Manic picked up a quick 5-1 jam and called it off. The next jam exploded into life when iKandy was completely sandwiched by Manic Bullet and Janis and fell but still managed to get lead jammer. The Black Widows were starting to pay the price for their trips to the penalty box as iKandy scored a 14-0 jam to increase the Bridezillas lead to 108-92.

There was complete confusion at the start of the next jam as Demander got through the pack first but had to yield her position to Penny Nartsy as she made a false start. Penny took it upon herself to create space as she pushed her own blocker to create space to get through and get lead jammer as she went on to score an 8-0 jam and make it an 8 point bout 108-100.

Then end of the second half was being played with the same intensity as the beginning of the first half as Manic used great speed and agility to get through the pack but ended up back blocking a Bridezilla blocker and was sent to the box. Peaches and White Hawk completely smashed Demander but she got back up quickly on her skates and used one of her blockers for a whip. Manic Bullet came back from the box completely un-noticed to pick up some points as the Bridezillas scored a 14-6 point jam to make the score 122-106 with 6 minutes left on the clock.

The Black Widows were doing everything they could to get back the lead as Underbelly Morelli got lead jammer as iKandy was completely SMASHED by the awesome blocking duo of White Hawk and Manic Bullet. Underbelly played it smart as she called off the jam before iKandy could score any points to make the score 122-115 with 4 ½ minutes left.

For a bout that was a see-saw affair right from the beginning there was still one twist left to be played as two Bridezilla blockers and one Black Widow blocker were all sent to the penalty box. The Black Widows then found just about most of their team rotating in and out of the penalty box as gaps appeared all over the track for iKandy who was scoring points for fun with the crowd cheering her on. She got an even bigger applause when it was revealed that she scored a 34-0 jam to take the score out to 156-115 with 45 seconds left on the clock to effectively tie up the bout.

Image

The last jam was an absolute free for all as the jam was played for the full two minutes. Both Demander and Janis were still hitting as hard as they were from the very first jam. The jam ended with the Bridezillas outscoring the Black Widows 26-10. After 32 jams the Bridezillas skated out 183-125 winners in what was a completely entertaining and hard hitting encounter!

WIRD are back in action on the 28th April with their Bold and the Bruised bout, don’t miss out! There may be further surprises with teams and line up’s in their next pre-season bout.

Help get WIRD to Adelaide to TGSS by making a donation either on their website or in person at one of their bouts.
